To advance to the championship game, Gunnlaugson won 4-1 over Jaap van Dorp (Zoetermeer, NED) in the semifinals of the 2016 Performance Spider Midweek Special in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario; and won 4-3 over Chris Gardner (Ottawa, ON) in the quarterfinals. of the 2016 Performance Spider Midweek Special in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario;
Gunnlaugson finished 2-1 in the 12-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Gunnlaugson defeated Cory Christensen (Blaine, USA) 6-3, then went on to lose 7-4 against van Dorp. Gunnlaugson responded with a 4-1 win over Michael Brunner (Gstaad, SUI) in their final qualifying round match.
For winning the Performance Spider Midweek Special Championship title, Gunnlaugson earned 20.830 world rankings points along with the $1,200CDN first prize cheque. Gunnlaugson move up 5 spots after posting a net gain of 44.592 points improving upon their best results so far this season, ranking 19th overall with 171.215 total points on the World Ranking Standings. Gunnlaugson ranks 3rd overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 44.591 points earned so far this season.
