McEwen finished 5-0 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, McEwen defeated Jamie Murphy (Halifax, NS) 7-3, then won 7-1 against Craig Brown (Madison, USA) and 5-4 against Sebastien Robillard (Ottawa, ON). McEwen won 5-3 against Jacobs, then won 7-2 against John Shuster (Duluth, USA) in their final qualifying round match.
