WORLD CURLING TEAM RANKING: CALCULATIONS

WCF World Team Rankings & WCF World Team Rankings Points Structure - Summary for the 2020-21 Season

The WCF World Team Rankings points model for the 2021-22 season will determine the points awarded for all events using a combination of size and strength of field, size of purse, and relative importance of large events.

Season Starting Points:
For 2021/22, players will each carry forward 22.5% of their previous YTD points along with a 10% team component that the team will maintain is they maintain 3 of 4 or 4 of 4 players from the previous season. Due to the shutdown of the WCF World Team Rankings for the 2020/21 season, Teams will begin the 2021/22 season with 50% (instead of 100%) of the 2019/20 season points. All values below reflect halving the values from 2019/20 season. Should a player have registered 0 points in the previous season, they would receive 50% of their points allocation from their season prior to that. Teams that maintain 3 of 4 players from the previous season will maintain a minimum of 100% of their previous season's points. The new player in that case can bring additional value.

Rolling Out of Event Count:
At the start of the 2021/22 season, teams will begin counting their 2 best events of the season until Week 14 (November 1st). Event schedule will continue after as following:

  • November 1st - count best 3 events.
  • December 1st - count best 4 events.
  • January 1st - count best 5 events.
  • Febuary 1st - count best 6 events.
  • March 1st - count best 8 events.

Decreasing Importance of Previous Season:
For 2021/22 season, team will begin the season with 50% of 2019/20 end of season points until January 1st. On January 1st, teams will continue to count 25% of the 2019/20 end of season points until March 1st when 2019/20 season's points will be reduced to 0%.

Event Categories:

1) Tour Cashspiels: this category represents the bulk of the events played on tour, including all events that qualify as Order of Merit sanctioned events. It will also include the Grand Slam Of Curling events outside of the four Grand Slams that meet the format requirements for Order of Merit inclusion.

2) Playdown/Special events: this category represents the following events: Provincials/Territorials, Nationals, Worlds, Europeans, Canada Cup, Olympic Trials, Olympics, the Grand Slams, and events similar to those described as per the eligibility requirements.

General rules that apply to all events:

Events must post results, which include full team rosters, draw schedule and full linescores on their own private website or through results service. This allows the results to be verifiable and have historical backup to the data.

Teams finishing in the top half of the field will receive WCF World Team Rankings/OOM points:
In a 2 or 3-team event, only the top team will receive fixed points. (Playdowns Only - 1st)
In a 4 or 5-team event, only the top 2 can receive fixed points. (Playdowns Only - 1st, 2nd)
In a 6 or 7-team event only the top 3 can receive fixed points. (Special Event OR Playdowns - 1st, 2nd, 3rd)
In a 8 or 9-team event only the top 4 can receive fixed points. (All Events - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th)
In a 10 or 11-team event only the top 5 can receive fixed points. (All Events - 1st, 2nd, SF2, QF1)
In a 12 or 13-team event only the top 6 can receive fixed points. (All Events - 1st, 2nd, SF2, QF2)
In a 14 team event only the top 7 can receive fixed points. (All Events - 1st, 2nd, SF2, QF3)
In a 15+ team event only the top 8 can receive fixed points. (All Events - 1st, 2nd, SF2, QF4)

For events where finding the top half of the field includes teams finishing in an equal placing but leaves greater than 50% of the field receiving points the following calculations will be completed: the teams that make up the tied placings (ex: QF losers ranked 5th & 6th in 10 team field) that finish with a losing record during the round robin (ex: 2-3) would get 50% of their qualifying points and all other record would get the full points.

Points Per Win at 0.375 times Strength of Field will be apply to all other teams in each event to reflect the value of their wins. This will balance out the different between losing a C-Qualifier and Quarterfinalist based on the number of wins it takes to get to that game.

The points utilizes a SFM (Strength Of Field Multiplier) number multiplied by a base-point value to determine the number of points available for playoff teams:

PlacingFixed Base Point Value: Championships / Special Events: 12 or less teams
1st 7.50
2nd5.50
3rd 4.25
4th 3.00
PlacingFixed Base Point Value: Tour Events / Other Events
1st 7.50
2nd5.50
3rd - 4th 4.25*
5th-8th 3.00^
* If a third place game is played, base value will be 4.50 for 3rd place, 4.00 for 4th place.
^ If more playoff teams qualify than positions available to an event, or tied across base point valus, the value of points will be awarded based on the Total Base Value divided between the total playoff teams reaching quarterfinals and muliplied by the SFM, or teams will receive point-per-win values, whichever number is higher.

All events will utilize a SFM value (including all Playdown/Special events). This SFM value reflects the quality of the teams participating in the event. The SFM value will be calculated using the Order of Merit (OOM) ranking on the Tuesday prior to the event, and will reflect a cumulative total using the following system:

Order Of Merit RankingSFM Contribution
10.45
20.44
30.43

21-300.25
31-500.20
51-1000.15
101-2000.10
201+0.05

The cumulative SFM number, as calculated above, will then be scaled to a 24-team format. This scaled SFM value is now normalized so it does not reflect the number of teams at an event.

Example: A 32 team event with a cumulative SFM of 5.6:

5.6 * (24/32) = 4.2

The cumulative SFM number does not have a limit.

After the scaled SFM has been calculated, it will then be adjusted to reflect the number of teams playing in an event.

ay

For Tour Cashspiel events, the minimum number of teams for Order of Merit inclusion is 8 and this corresponds to a minimum factor of 0.750. The adjusting factor maxes out in an event with 32 teams, at a maximum value of 1.5. For events in between this range, the following formula will determine the factor where n represents the number of teams playing:

1 + (n – 16) * 0.03125

The Playdown/Special events category will calculate this team factor slightly differently for both Playdown and Special Events. For all Playdown events: Pre-provincial qualification, Provincials/Territorial, Nationals and Worlds, there is no minimum number of teams to qualify for WCF World Team Rankings/OOM inclusion. Nationals, Worlds and Playdown events leading up to Nationals with 10 or more teams will use the factor described above (1+(n--16)*0.03125). Pre-Nationals Playdown events with less than 10 teams will use a more discounted formula:

n/16

Lastly, for all Tour Cashspiel events there will be a second factor that reflects the size of cash purse available to the players. The minimum purse requirement for Order of Merit inclusion is $300/team playing (i.e. a 24-team event must have at least $7,200 total purse). This purse factor will range in between 0.96 to 1.25 where the minimum ($300/team) represents the 0.96 factor, and the maximum ($2000+/team) represents the 1.25 factor. For purses in between this range, the following formula will determine the factor where p represents the purse value divided by the number of teams:

1 + (p – 500) * 0.00017

After the SFM has been calculated and scaled to the 24-team format it will then be multiplied by the 2 factors (number of teams and purse size) to get a final value. This final SFM value is then used in combination with the base-point structure (as shown above) to determine the number of points available. The following is an example:

A sanctioned Tour Cashspiel has 32 teams competing for a purse of $50,000. In the field of 32 teams, there are:

  • 5 top 20 teams ranked in the positions # 1, 4, 7, 13, and 17.
  • 2 teams ranked #21--30.
  • 4 teams ranked #31--50.
  • 1 team ranked # 51--100.
  • 6 teams ranked #101--200.
  • 14 teams ranked #201+.

The cumulative SFM value using the above table is: 4.63. This value is then scaled to the 24-team format:

4.63 * (24/32) = 3.47

The first factor (number of teams) is at a maximum for a 32-team event: 1.5

The second factor (purse size) is calculated using the equation below. The value of p is ($50000/32 = 1562.5):

1 + (1562.5 – 500) * 0.00017 = 1.18

The final SFM value is then calculated by multiplying both factors to the scaled SFM value:

3.47 * 1.50 * 1.18 = 6.15

The last step is using this final SFM value in combination with the base-point structure to determine the points available:

PlaceFinal SFMBase PointsTotal
1st6.150 7.50 46.125
2nd6.1505.5033.830
3rd - 4th6.1504.2526.140
5th - 8th6.1503.0018.450
* this event yields a total of 202.96 points

Points per win will be available for all events in the Playdown/Special events category and for events in the Tour Cashspiel category for non-playoff teams only. These points per win will be rewarded as per:

  • 0.375*SFM points-per-win: For example, using the SFM value of 6.150 above, teams playing this event would therefore receive 6.150*0.375 = 2.306 points per win for non-playoff teams only.

Playdown/Special rules and calculations
To reflect the relative importance of events in this category, they will be awarded a bonus multiple to determine the points available for WCF World Team Rankings/OOM. This factor will be applied at the very end, and represents a percentage increase based on the importance and will be done according to the following:

Event TypePercentage Increase
Provincial / Territorialn/a
Nationals90%
Europeans/PAC 190%
Worlds 200%
Olympic Trials 190%
Olympics 250%
Canada Cup/Special Event*35%
World Cup 115%
Players' Championship 120%
Grand Slam Majors110%
* Importance Factor available only if 50% of field ranks inside the Top 15 on the Order of Merit

All of the events in this category are still predominately SFM-based events. This additional factor was implemented based on historical significance to adjust the points available to match the importance of winning/placing in such events.
