In their opening game, Smith defeated Gordon Muirhead (Pitlochry, SCO) 6-5, then won 7-6 against David Murdoch (Lockerbie, SCO) and 6-5 against Craig Reid (Kilmarnock, SCO). Smith went on to lose 8-4 against Colin Hamilton (Gogar Park, SCO). Smith responded with a 9-4 win over Scott Hamilton (Lockerbie, SCO). Smith won 7-1 against Logan Gray (Stirling, SCO), then won 8-7 against Brewster. Smith went on to lose 8-7 against David Edwards (Aberdeen, SCO). Smith responded with a 10-3 win over Alan Smith (Kilmarnock, SCO) in their final qualifying round match.
