Schmidt won 8-3 against David Murdoch (Scotland, UK), then won 6-5 against Andy Kapp (Fuessen, GER). Schmidt went on to lose 9-4 against Brad Gushue (St. John's, NL). Schmidt responded with a 5-4 win over Switzerland's Markus Eggler in their final qualifying round match.
