Thomas Ulsrud (Oslo, NOR) won 7-6 over Russ Howard (Moncton, NB) in the Final of the Bern Open, held October 16 - 18, 2009 in Bern, Switzerland. To advance to the championship game, Ulsrud won 6-4 over Peter Loudon (Perth, SCO) in the semifinals of the 2009 Bern Open in Bern, Switzerland; and won 7-3 over Hammy McMillan (Stranraer, SCO) in the quarterfinals. of the 2009 Bern Open in Bern, Switzerland;
 
Ulsrud finished 5-1 in the 32-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Ulsrud defeated Mark Neeleman (Zoetemeer, NED) 6-2, then went on to lose 5-3 against Loudon. Ulsrud responded with a 6-5 win over Pierre Charette (Etchemin, PQ). Ulsrud won 6-5 against Mark Dacey (Halifax, NS), then won 7-6 against Alexander Attinger (Dübendorf, SUI) and 7-1 against Neeleman in their final qualifying round match.
 
For winning the Bern Open Championship title, Ulsrud earned 17.990 world rankings points along with the $12,734CDN first prize cheque. For week of the event schedule, Ulsrud did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. Ulsrud ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
