Colin Koivula (Thunder Bay, NONT) won 5-2 over Minnesota's Tyler George in the Final of the Courtesy Freight Northern Ontario Superspiel, held November 11 - 14, 2011 at the Port Arthur Curling Club in Thunder Bay, Canada. To advance to the championship game, Koivula won 8-2 over Brennan Wark (Thunder Bay, ON) in the semifinals of the 2011 Courtesy Freight Northern Ontario Superspiel in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada; and won 7-5 over Northern Ontario's Trevor Bonot in the quarterfinals.
Koivula finished 4-2 in the 32-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Koivula defeated Eric Fenson (Bemidji, MN) 7-3, then won 3-1 against Northern Ontario's Jeff Currie and 5-3 against Jack Carr (Thunder Bay, NONT). Koivula went on to lose 6-3 against Minnesota's Tyler George. Koivula lost 6-4 to Wark where Koivula responded with a 4-3 win over Mike Pozihun (thundwer bay, NONT) in their final qualifying round match.
For winning the Courtesy Freight Northern Ontario Superspiel Championship title, Koivula earned 4.250 world rankings points along with the $5,000CDN first prize cheque. For week 13 of the event schedule, Koivula did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. Koivula ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
