Kevin Kakela (Rolla, ND) finished 2-3 in the 18-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Kakela defeated Randy Baird (Bemidji, MN) 4-3, then went on to lose 4-3 against Al Hackner (Thunder Bay , NONT). Kakela lost 7-3 to Kyle Doering (Winnipeg, MB) where Kakela responded with a 7-1 win over North Dakota's Scott Brown. Kakela went on to lose 6-5 against John Shuster (Duluth, MN) in their final qualifying round match.
