In their opening game, Scholz defeated Jeff Heck (Indianapolis, IN) 8-3, then went on to lose 7-3 against Garnet Eckstrand (Kalamazoo, MI). Scholz responded with a 7-3 win over Heck. Scholz won 6-4 against Mark Robinson (Pittsburgh, PA), then won 9-6 against Paul Ellarby (Burnsville, MN) in their final qualifying round match.
