Surka won 10-2 against Dennis Mellerup (Plainfield, NJ), then won 10-1 against Fred Maxie (Scottsdale, AZ). Surka went on to lose 10-3 against Lyle Sieg (Seattle, WA). Surka responded with a 8-2 win over Sean Murray (Watertown, WI). Surka won 10-2 against Greg Wilson (Chicago, IL), then won 11-4 against Andy Jukich (St. Paul, MN) in their final qualifying round match.
