Johnston finished 3-1 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Johnston defeated Jonathan Doan (Sarnia, ON) 6-4, then won 1-0 against Ontario's Scott McDonald. Johnston went on to lose 1-0 against Craig Brown (Madison, WI). Johnston responded with a 5-3 win over Jake Walker (Brampton, ON) in their final qualifying round match.
 
Johnston earned 2.700 world rankings points for their Top 5 finish in the Huron ReproGraphics Oil Heritage Classic, moving up 61 spots the World Ranking Standings into 166th place overall with 4.371 total points.
