In their opening game, Ursel defeated Jeff Thomas (St. John's, NL) 9-3, then went on to lose 6-5 against Guy Charette (Buckingham, QC). Ursel responded with a 6-3 win over Grant Odishaw (Rothesay, NB). Ursel won 10-2 against Ed Sattelberger (Iqaluit, NU), then won 9-1 against Rod MacDonald (Charlottetown, PEI). Ursel went on to lose 8-5 against Alan O'Leary (Dartmouth, NS). Ursel responded with a 6-4 win over Ed Lukowich (Calgary, AB). Ursel won 5-3 against Brad Heidt (Kerrobert, SK), then won 8-2 against Bryan Cochrane (Russell, ON). Ursel went on to lose 6-0 against Randy Neufeld (La Salle, MB) in their final qualifying round match.
