Shinya Abe (Sapporo, JPN) lost 10-5 to Yusuke Morozumi (Karuizawa, JPN) in the Final of the Japan Curling Championships, held January 30 - February 5, 2017 in Karuizawa, Japan.
 
Abe finished 7-1 in the 9-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Abe defeated Hiromitsu Fujinaka (Okayama, JPN) 11-3, then won 9-6 against Kota Onodera (Hokkaido, JPN). Abe went on to lose 7-6 against Ryo Ogihara (Karuizawa, JPN). Abe responded with a 8-6 win over Yuki Sawamukai (Hokkaido, JPN). Abe won 9-5 against Taisel Miura (Hokkaido, JPN), then won 7-6 against Junpei Kanda (Tokyo, JPN) and 7-6 against Morozumi. Abe won 6-2 against Shingo Usui (Sapporo, JPN) in their final qualifying round match.
 
With their runner-up finish at the Japan Curling Championships, Abe take home 9.405 world rankings points, moving up 48 spots the World Ranking Standings into 198th place overall with 22.310 total points. Abe ranks 202nd overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 10.791 points earned so far this season.
