To advance to the championship game, Walstad won 6-5 over Niklas Edin (Karlstad, SWE) in the semifinals of the 2017 GSOC Tour Challenge Tier 1 in Regina, Saskatchewan; and won 11-4 over Pat Simmons (Winnipeg, MB) in the quarterfinals. of the 2017 GSOC Tour Challenge Tier 1 in Regina, Saskatchewan;
 
Walstad finished 4-0 in the 15-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Walstad defeated Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, MB) 8-4, then won 8-6 against Steve Laycock (Saskatoon, SK) and 7-5 against Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste Marie, ON). Walstad won 6-5 against John Morris (Vernon, BC) in their final qualifying round match.
 
With their runner-up finish at the GSOC Tour Challenge Tier 1, Walstad take home 58.716 world rankings points along with the $15,000CDN prize, moving up 1 spots the World Ranking Standings into 13th place overall with 258.937 total points.
