Howard finished 3-1 in the 15-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Howard defeated Mike McEwen (Winnipeg, MB) 10-4, then went on to lose 5-3 against Kevin Koe (Calgary, AB). Howard responded with a 6-5 win over Kurt Balderston (Grande Prairie, AB). Howard won 7-5 against Jason Gunnlaugson (Winnipeg, MB) in their final qualifying round match.
