To advance to the championship game, Ruohonen won 5-4 over Andrew Stopera (Chicago, IL) in the semifinals of the 2017 Curl Mesabi Classic in Eveleth, Minnesota, United States; and won 7-6 over Heath McCormick (Blaine, USA) in the quarterfinals. of the 2017 Curl Mesabi Classic in Eveleth, Minnesota, United States;
 
Ruohonen finished 4-0 in the 20-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Ruohonen defeated Pete Fenson (Bemidji, MN) 6-4, then won 7-1 against 's Cameron Rittenour and 6-5 against Adam Casey (Regina, SK). Ruohonen won 10-5 against Colin Koivula (Thunder Bay , NONT) in their final qualifying round match.
 
For winning the Curl Mesabi Classic Championship title, Ruohonen earned 28.467 world rankings points along with the $7,709CDN first prize cheque. For week 18 of the event schedule, Ruohonen did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. Ruohonen ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
