Mike McEwen (West St. Paul, MB) finished 6-5 in the 16-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, McEwen defeated Kirk Muyres (Saskatoon, SK) 7-6, then won 8-3 against Martin Crete (Levis, QC). McEwen went on to lose 9-8 against Brendan Bottcher (Edmonton, AB). McEwen lost 7-6 to Jon Solberg (Whitehorse, YK) where McEwen responded with a 12-4 win over Andrew Symonds (St. John's, NL). McEwen went on to lose 9-5 against Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste Marie, ON). McEwen responded with a 7-6 win over John Likely (Charlottetown, PEI). McEwen went on to lose 6-3 against Brad Gushue (St. John's, CAN). McEwen lost 6-5 to Kevin Koe (Calgary, AB) where McEwen responded with a 9-7 win over Jim Cotter (Vernon, BC). McEwen won 8-4 against Scott McDonald (Kingston, ON) in their final qualifying round match.

McEwen earned 22.508 world rankings points for their preliminary round wins, remaining in 12th place overall on the World Ranking Standings with a net gain of 12.735 after improving upon their best so far this season. McEwen ranks 12th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 255.036 points earned so far this season.
