Wille Makela (Hyvinkaa, FIN) won 8-4 over Harri Lill (Tallinn, EST) in the Final of the Latvia International Challenger, held October 25 - 28, 2018 in Tukums, Latvia. To advance to the championship game, Makela won 8-3 over Michael Mueller (Aarau, SUI) in the semifinals of the 2018 Latvia International Challenger in Tukums, Latvia; and won 8-5 over Ulrik Damm (Hvidovre, DEN) in the quarterfinals. of the 2018 Latvia International Challenger in Tukums, Latvia;
Makela finished 3-1 in the 13-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Makela lost 8-7 to Ritvars Gulbis (Riga, LAT), then responded with a 4-3 win over Martins Truksans (Riga, LAT). Makela won 7-6 against Konstantin Rykov (Vilnius, LTU), then won 7-4 against Robin Brydone (Perth, SCO) in their final qualifying round match.
For winning the Latvia International Challenger Championship title, Makela earned 9.773 world rankings points along with the $2,090CDN first prize cheque, moving up 89 spots the World Ranking Standings into 173rd place overall with 16.062 total points. Makela ranks 96th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 16.062 points earned so far this season.
