Carruthers finished 4-0 in the 15-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Carruthers defeated Yamaguchi 5-2, then won 7-1 against Yoshiro Shimizu (Karuizawa, JPN) and 6-2 against Jongduk Park (Gangwon, KOR). Carruthers won 9-2 against Daiki Shikano (Sapporo, JPN) in their final qualifying round match.
