In their opening game, Shuster defeated Joel Retornaz (Trentino, ITA) 8-3, then won 9-3 against Qiang Zou (Beijing, CHN) and 9-3 against Masaki Iwai (Sapporo, JPN). Shuster won 9-2 against Iwai, then won 6-3 against Retornaz and 5-3 against Zou in their final qualifying round match.
