In their opening game, Kanai defeated Kota Onodera (Hokkaido, JPN) 7-2, then went on to lose 10-4 against Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi (Karuizawa, JPN). Kanai responded with a 9-1 win over Tomoji Arai (Tokyo, JPN). Kanai won 9-6 against Yumiko Kashiwagi (Karuizawa, JPN). Kanai went on to lose 6-1 against Yuhei Kusui (Osaka, JPN) in their final qualifying round match.
