Rick Phillips (Red Deer, AB) finished 3-3 in the 15-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Phillips defeated Terry Meek (Calgary, AB) 8-7, then won 8-4 against Rob Johnson (Calgary, AB). Phillips went on to lose 7-2 against Aaron Sluchinski (Airdrie, AB). Phillips lost 8-2 to Johnson where Phillips responded with a 9-4 win over Jamie Cochrane (Calgary, AB). Phillips went on to lose 8-4 against Kevin Park (Strathmore, AB) in their final qualifying round match.

Phillips earned 2.180 world rankings points for their preliminary round wins, moving up 159 spots the World Ranking Standings into 375th place overall with 2.452 total points. Phillips ranks 334th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 2.180 points earned so far this season.
