Russell Heier (Bismarck, ND) 6-5, then won 9-0 against Mark Carothers (Fairbanks, AK) and 6-3 against Jon Schiestel (Greeley, CO). Sormunen won 6-3 against Craig Halliday (Denver, CO). Sormunen went on to lose 9-7 against Joel Larway (Lynnwood, WA). Sormunen lost 7-2 to Jeff Wright (Libertyville, IL) where Sormunen responded with a 5-3 win over Jeff Erickson (Duluth, MN) in their final qualifying round match.
 
Sormunen ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
