To advance to the championship game, Gushue won 5-4 over Jamie Murphy (Halifax, NS) in the semifinals of the 2020 Stu Sells 1824 Halifax Classic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; and won 7-3 over Brent MacDougall (Halifax, NS) in the quarterfinals.
 
Gushue finished 3-0 in the 16-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Gushue defeated Greg Smith (St. John's, NL) 13-1, then won 6-3 against Trent Skanes (St. John's, NL) and 5-4 against James Grattan (Oromocto, NB) in their final qualifying round match.
 
For winning the Stu Sells 1824 Halifax Classic Championship title, Gushue earned 0.000 world rankings points along with the $6,000CDN first prize cheque.
