McEwen finished 4-1 in the 18-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, McEwen defeated Alex Champ (Toronto, ON) 10-1, then won 7-4 against Kyler Kleibrink (Langley, BC) and 9-2 against Cole Adams (Calgary, AB). McEwen went on to lose 6-5 against Morozumi. McEwen responded with a 6-1 win over Riku Yanagisawa (Karuizawa, JPN) in their final qualifying round match.
