Sato finished 2-1 in the 8-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Sato defeated Kohsuke Hirata (Kitami, JPN) 7-5, then won 7-6 against Japan's Kantaro Kawano. Sato went on to lose 8-5 against Morozumi in their final qualifying round match.
 
With their runner-up finish at the Wakkanai Midori Challenge Cup, Sato take home 13.750 world rankings points along with the $4,646CDN prize, moving up 4 spots the World Ranking Standings into 39th place overall with 92.000 total points.
