Johnston finished 9-6 in the 16-team qualifying round. . Johnston went on to lose 8-5 against Gary Weiss (Thunder Bay, NO). Johnston lost 6-3 to Ron Rosengren (Thunder Bay, NO) where Johnston responded with a 7-6 win over Bryan Burgess (Thunder Bay, NO). Johnston won 6-4 against Jackson Dubinsky (Thunder Bay, NO), then won 6-2 against Andrew Sinclair (Thunder Bay, NO). Johnston went on to lose 7-4 against Adams Jr.. Johnston lost 6-3 to Al Hackner (Thunder Bay, NO) where Johnston responded with a 5-3 win over Robyn Despins (Thunder Bay, NO). Johnston won 8-1 against Chris Silver (Thunder Bay, NO), then won 5-4 against McCarville and 5-2 against Jodi Judd (Thunder Bay, NO). Johnston won 6-5 against Denis Malette (Thunder Bay, NO) in their final qualifying round match.
