Shinya Abe (Sapporo, JPN) won 5-4 over Takumi Maeda (Tokoro, JPN) in the Final of the Wakkanai Midori Challenge Cup, held August 8 - 11, 2024 in Hokkaido, Japan. To advance to the championship game, Abe won 4-3 over Kohsuke Hirata (Kitami, JPN) in the semifinals
Abe finished 3-1 in the 10-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Abe defeated Maeda 6-5, then went on to lose 5-2 against Koki Ogiwara (Sapporo, JPN). Abe responded with a 9-4 win over Soo-Hyuk Kim (Gyeongbuk, KOR). Abe won 8-5 against Riku Yanagisawa (Karuizawa, JPN) in their final qualifying round match.
For winning the Wakkanai Midori Challenge Cup Championship title, Abe earned 18.750 world rankings points. For week 2 of the event schedule, Abe did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. Abe ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
