Scotland survives Sweden to stay alive

Heading into day five of the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, Scotland's Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat were on a downhill slide, dropping back-to-back games against Korea and Italy to sit 4-2 in the standings. Needing to get back in the win column, the 2021 world champions faced Sweden's Anna Hasselborg and Oskar Eriksson (5-1) in a heavy weight tilt Wednesday morning in Fredericton.

Despite losing the pregame draw shot challenge, Scotland got off to an ideal start in the match, forcing Sweden to one in the first before taking two in the second. This was the last of their scoring in the first half, however, with Hasselborg and Eriksson taking two in the third and stealing one in four to go ahead 4-2.

A perfect end by Dodds and Mouat in five allowed them to put pressure on the Swedes, ultimately taking three to go back in front 5-4. Then in six, Sweden could only manage one on their power play, tying the game with two ends left to play.

Still having their power play, Scotland utilized this advantage to convert two in the seventh end, inching ahead 7-5 heading to eight. There, a tricky tap for the win did not go Anna Hasselborg's way as the Swedes only picked up a single, giving the Scotts a much needed 7-6 victory on day 5 of the competition.

While the loss would have most likely eliminated them from contention, Dodds and Mouat now move into a tie for third place with Sweden who also falls back to 5-2. Both teams will be fighting for the final playoff spot out of Group A with Scotland holding the important head-to-head advantage.

Italy is the first team to qualify out of the pool, winning their seventh game 8-2 over China while Canada is now 6-1 after dispatching Finland 13-2. The Finns, now 4-3, are the only team besides the four leaders with an outside chance at qualification.

Next up for Scotland is Germany's Pia-Lisa Schoell and Josh Sutor (2-5) before meeting Canada's Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant (6-1) in the final round robin draw. At this stage in the competition, a win is crucial to guarantee a spot in the six-team playoff round.
