By Connor Simms, #25 World-Ranked Sam Mooibroek with Ryan Wiebe at third, Scott Mitchell and Nathan Steele on the front end kick off the season in the win column. They took on Manitoba's Jordon McDonald in the final. McDonald started with the hammer due to their perfect round-robin record. Mooibroek started the game with back-to-back steals of one, after McDonald missed a double for two and a half, a rock slash for two. In the third end, McDonald had a draw to the four foot for two, but ended up coming heavy and missing the backing, having to settle for their single point. The first error from Mooibroek occurred in the fourth end, after he missed an open hit and stick for their single point, resulting in a steal of two for McDonald. Mooibroek was quick to respond in the fifth, making a nose runback for three points to take a 5-3 lead. McDonald was forced to their single point in the seventh, drawing to the button. In the eighth end, McDonald had a long runback to try and sit one, but was unable to connect, giving the win to Mooibroek 6-4. In the semifinals, Mooibroek defeated Nova Scotia's Calan MacIsaac 7-5, and Jordon McDonald (Winnipeg, MB) defeated Ontario's Jayden King 8-2. Mooibroek finished 4-1 in the 12-team qualifying round. In their opening game, Mooibroek lost 8-3 to Newfoundland and Labrador's Simon Perry, then responded with a 6-4 win over Alberta's Zach Davies. Mooibroek won 7-6 against Manitoba's Jace Freeman, then won 7-3 against Saskatchewan's Bradley Moser and 5-3 against King in their final qualifying round match. Mooibroek returns to win this event for the first time since its inaugural year in 2022. Sam and Nathan have a record of 22 wins and 5 losses in this event. Ryan goes to 17 wins and 7 losses, while. Scott goes to 16 wins and 4 losses in this event. Mooibroek's next event will be in the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard next weekend in Oakville, Ontario. |
