Cameron Qualifies for Playoffs in Edmonton
![]() Manitoba's Kate Cameron (Photo: Curling Canada) defeated Alberta's Kayla Skrlik 5-3 to secure a playoff berth at the Saville Grand Prix in Edmonton, Alberta. By Connor Simms, #19 World-Ranked Kate Cameron with Briane Harris at third, Taylor McDonald, and Mackenzie Elias on the front end bounce back in back-to-back weekends in Edmonton. Cameron is off to a busy start, playing in their third event. They kicked off their season at the Asham Icebreaker Challenge in Morris, Manitoba, where they went home with a second-place finish. The following week, they participated in the Saville Shootout in Edmonton, where they finished 1-3 in the round robin, which was not enough to qualify for the playoffs. They returned to Edmonton this weekend to compete in the Saville Grand Prix, seeking a better result. They started hot in round robin with three wins over Alberta's Heather Steele 9-1, Alberta's Gracelyn Richards 6-4 and Alberta's Myla Plett 7-3. Even though they were 3-0, there were still questions about whether they would lose their final round robin if they were in the playoffs. They took on Alberta's Kayla Skrlik in their final round robin game, winning the opening draw to the button for the hammer. After blanks in the first two ends, Cameron came up heavy on a draw to the four-foot, giving up a steal of one in the third end. Cameron got on the board in the fourth end, making a hit and stick for their single point. Skrlik was forced to their single point in the fifth after a nice double runback. In the sixth end, Cameron opened the game with three points, making an open hit and stick on her last. In an end that looked like a steal for Cameron, Skrlik made a lightweight tap on an over buried stone to get her single point in the seventh. Cameron ended the game with a hit and stick on her last to win the game 5-3 and go 4-0 through the round robin. In the quarterfinals, Cameron will play Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes at 8:30 am Mountain Time (MT). The playoffs will continue throughout the day, with the finals happening at 5:00 pm MT.
