The team's first event this season was last weekend at the Saville Shootout. They came out with a lineup with Njegovan now calling the game, while Lawes now sweeps and continues to throw fourth stones. Their debut of this lineup came last season, toward the end of the Scottie Tournament of Hearts, where the team felt they needed a change ahead of the Olympic season. At the Saville Shoutout, Lawes finished in the quarterfinals, losing to Alberta's Serena Gray-Withers. Their schedule consisted of staying in Edmonton for the Saville Grand Prix. Last season at this event, they went 3-1 through the round robin, losing the semi-final to Manitoba's Kerri Einarson. This season, Lawes finished 3-1 in the 24-team qualifying round. In their opening game, Lawes defeated Alberta's Emma Deschiffart 10-2, then won 7-2 against Serena Gray-Withers. They then defeated Saskatchewan's Nancy Martin. Lawes went on to lose 5-2 against Gim in their final qualifying round match. In the quarterfinals, they took on Manitoba's Kate Cameron 10-2. This set up a rematch in the semi-finals against Gim, where they came through with a 5-3 win. This set up a match with Korea's Youbeen Park in the final. Lawes won the opening draw to the button for the hammer. Lawes started hot with three points in the first end, making the opening draw to the paint. Park gets their single point in the second, making a draw to the side of the four-foot against three. Lawes responded with their single point, making a hit and stick against three. Park was forced once again, making a lightweight takeout against two lawes counters. In the fifth end, Lawes took her single point back, making a draw to the button against one Park stone. Lawes remained perfect on defence, forcing Park to an open hit and stick for their single point. Lawes grabbed two more in the seventh end, making a lightweight hit. Lawes then ran Park out of stones in the eighth end, taking the 7-3 victory. Lawes jumped from #21 World-Ranked to #16 after that win. Putting themselves in a good position to return to the Grand Slam of Curling Tier 1 events. Lawes' next event is the AMJ Masters Tier 2 event in London, Ontario, from September 23rd-28th. |
