MacMillan Remains Undefeated

By Connor Simms, Looking to round up the field in Halifax for the Canadian Olympic Trials, Kayla MacMillan with Brittany Tran at third, Lindsay Dubue, Sarah Loken and Lauren Lenentine on the front end and coach Niklas Edin are on a roll to begin this week. Sitting at #26 in the world, MacMillan won their first event of the season at the Asham IceBreaker Challenge. They then went on to a semi-final finish at the AMJ Masters Tier 2 event in London, Ontario. This week, they are at the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials. Lenentine is the only one with experience at this event, playing with Mackenzie Zacharias in 2021. In their third game, they took on Saskatchewan's Nancy Martin. MacMillan won the opening game, drawing to the button for the hammer. Martin opened the scoring by stealing one in the first end. After a blank end, MacMillan scored 3 in the third end. After blanking 2 ends, Martin scored a single in the sixth end. After a blank end, MacMillan scored a single in the eighth end, and Martin responded in the ninth end, scoring 2. MacMillan scored 2 in the tenth end to take the 6-4 victory. In their opening game, they defeated Ashley Thevenot (Saskatoon, SK) 7-2, then won 9-7 against Danielle Inglis (Ottawa, ON). In their next game, MacMillan plays Krista Scharf (Thunder Bay, NO) on Wednesday at 9:00 am Atlantic Time (AT) and Myla Plett (Edmonton, AB) at 7:00 pm AT. They then take on Selena Sturmay (Edmonton, AB) on Thursday at 2:00 pm AT and Beth Peterson (Winnipeg, MB) at 7:00 pm AT. The format for this event is an 8-team round-robin, with each team playing everybody once. The top team at the end of the round robin will get a spot in the final, while the second and third seeds will play in a semi-final. From there, the winner of the 2v3 game and the top seed will face off in a best two-of-three final. The winner will move on to play in the 2025 Canadian Olympic Trials in November.
