Homan wins Canadian Olympic Curling Trials

Rachel Homan (Ottawa, ON) wins the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings, defeating Chelsea Carey (Calgary, AB) 6-5 at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Canada. Homan with Emma Miskew at third, Joanne Courtney and Lisa Weagle on the front end will represent Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea in February.

Homan opened the scoring stealing 1 in the first end when Carey missed a blank attempt. Homan added another steal in the second end after a nice hit and roll on her last, which forced Carey into a tough chip that wrecked on the guard. Carey bounced back scoring a single in the third end, then forced Homan to a single in the fourth end. After Carey scored a single in the fifth end, Homan broke the game open in the sixth end scoring 2 when she split the house after a Carey rollout and then hit for two. Carey scored 2 back in the seventh end after Homan chose to play a little defense to protect their lead, leaving an open hit for the deuce. After a blank in 8, Homan drew against 3 in the 9th end for one, her shot just holding on in the back to avoid a steal. Homan headed into the 10th end with a 6-4 lead.

Homan, 24-1 over the last four seasons up 2 without hammer was in a comfortable spot, her only loss in the situation coming under 5-rock Grand Slam rules to Eve Muirhead. On her last, Homan attempted a hit and roll to lie three, but it ran straight and she nearly missed the double to end the game, a plan B call in the moment. It left Carey with a bit of a finesse double for two to force an extra end, but her stone over-curled removing only 1 of the Homan stones which was not enough. Carey got one, with Homan winning 6-5 to secure the Olympic berth.

In the semifinals, Homan defeated Jennifer Jones (Winnipeg, MB) 6-3 on Saturday. For their win, Homan receives 82.578 world ranking points, Carey gets 64.882 world ranking points for their second place finish and Jones receives 50.136 points for their third place finish.

Homan went 7-1 in the 9 team round robin qualifying round. In their opening game, Homan lost 8-4 to Carey, then responded with a 8-7 win over Julie Tippin (Woodstock, ON). Homan didn't lose again with wins against Krista McCarville (Thunder Bay, ON) 4-2, Michelle Englot (Winnipeg, MB) 11-7, Allison Flaxey (Caledon, ON) 5-3, Casey Scheidegger (Lethbridge, AB) 10-7, Val Sweeting (Edmonton, AB) 7-5, and Jones 9-4 in their final qualifying round match.
