By Connor Simms, The Edmonton, Alberta, squad, comprised of Selena Sturmay, Danielle Schmiemann (third), Dezaray Hawes, and Paige Papley, will compete for the eighth spot at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It has been a bit of a slow start for the World-Ranked #40 squad, as they missed the playoffs in three of their four events so far this season. Their best finish was the quarterfinals at the Saville Grand Prix. This week, they are at the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials. Selena and Paige make their debut at this event. Dezeray looks for revenge as she just missed out on the Trials, losing the final. Danielle has not played in the pre-trials portion; however, she did make the Trials with a direct spot, last quad with skip Kelsey (Calvert) Rocque. In their fifth game, they took on Ashley Thevenot (Saskatoon, SK). Sturmay won the opening game, drawing to the button for the hammer. Thevenot opened the scoring, stealing 1 in the first end. Sturmay responded on the second end, scoring 2. Then added a steal of 3 in the third end, and added another steal of 2 in the fourth end. Thevenot scored 3 in the fifth end, and Sturmay responded in the sixth end, scoring 2. Thevenot scored a single in the seventh end, Sturmay responded in the eighth end, scoring 2 for the 11-5 win. In their opening game, Sturmay defeated Krista Scharf (Thunder Bay, NO) 7-3, then won 8-3 against Beth Peterson (Winnipeg, MB). Sturmay went on to lose 10-5 against Myla Plett (Edmonton, AB). Sturmay responded with a 7-6 win over Nancy Martin (Wakaw, SK). In their next game, Sturmay plays Kayla MacMillan (Victoria, BC) on Thursday at 2:00 pm Atlantic Time and Danielle Inglis (Ottawa, ON) at 7:00 pm AT. The format for this event is an 8-team round-robin, with each team playing every other team once. The top team at the end of the round robin will get a spot in the final, while the second and third seeds will play in a semi-final. From there, the winner of the 2v3 game and the top seed will face off in a best two-of-three final. The winner will advance to compete in the 2025 Canadian Olympic Trials in November.
