Carruthers Looks to Build Momentum
![]() Manitoba's Reid Carruthers (Photo: Curling Canada) is set to return to the Henderson Metal Fall Classic presented by Kioti Tractors of Ontario this weekend. By Connor Simms, #24 World-Ranked Reid Carruthers with B.J. Neufeld at third, Catlin Schneider, Kyle Doering and Connor Njegovan on the front end are looking for momentum heading into the weekend. Earlier this summer, Carruthers announced that they would pull out of the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials. This is because they wanted to shift their focus to the Montana Brier later this season, as well as Reid wanted to focus on coaching Kerri Einarson's squad at the Trials. Last week, they were at the Co-op Tour Challenge in Nisku, Alberta, making their return to the Grand Slam of Curling scene for the first time since the Kioti National last season. They went 2-2, which is usually good enough for a tiebreaker, but due to their Last Stone Draw (LSD) score, they just missed it. This week, they are at the Henderson Metal Fall Classic presented by Kioti Tractors of Ontario in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. B.J. is a 2-time defending champ of this event, winning with former skip Matt Dunstone. Carruthers' squad last season went 5-3, losing the quarterfinal to Switzerland's Marco Hoesli. This week's event features an 18-team, triple-knockout format. Two teams will qualify from the A-side, and three from the B/C-side. The playoffs will then consist of a regular 8-team, single-elimination round. Carruthers will open their event on Thursday at 10:00 am Eastern Time (ET) against Jonathan Beuk (Kingston, ON). In the other Draw 1 action, Nathan Young (St. John's, NL) will play Jordan Chandler (Little Current, NO), Sandy MacEwan (Sudbury, NO) will face JC Beecroft (Sault Ste. Marie, NO), Marco Hoesli (Glarus, SUI) vs Michael Fournier (Toronto, ON), Daniel Casper (Chaska, MN) vs Jongduk Park (Gangwon, KOR) and Joel Retornaz (Trentino, ITA) vs Alex Champ (Toronto, ON).
