Menard Grabs Much Needed Victory
![]() Quebec's Jean Michel Menard (Photo: Curling Canada) defeated Ontario's Mark Kean 8-5 to grab a 4-2 record at the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. By Connor Simms, Jean Michel Menard as skip, throwing third stones with Felix Asselin throwing the last stones, and Martin Crete and Jean-Francois Trepanier on the front end, continue to look like strong contenders at the Canadian Pre-Trials. This season, they are on fire with an event win at the Invitation Valleyfield event and a semi-final finish at the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard. This week, they are at the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials. Felix and Martin return to this event for the second straight time. In 2021, they went 3-3, just missing the playoff round with skip Michael Fournier. In their sixth game, they took on Ontario's Mark Kean. Menard won the opening game draw to the button for the hammer. Menard scored 1 in the first end, then forced Kean to a single in the second end. Menard scored a single in the third end, and Kean responded in the fourth end, scoring 2. Menard scored a single in the fifth end, then forced Kean to a single in the sixth end. Menard scored 3 in the seventh end, then added a steal in the eighth end. Kean scored a single in the ninth end, and Menard scored a single in the tenth end for the 8-5 win. In their opening game, Menard defeated Braden Calvert (Winnipeg, MB) 7-2, then won 6-5 against Sam Mooibroek (Whitby, ON). Menard went on to lose 7-6 against Owen Purcell (Halifax, NS). Menard responded with a 9-6 win over Jordon McDonald (Winnipeg, MB). Menard went on to lose 7-4 against Scott Howard (Navan, ON). With this win, Menard is avoiding dropping to a third loss and remains in sole possession of second place behind Howard. In their final round robin game, Menard will face Jayden Kind (London, ON) on Thursday at 2:00 pm Atlantic Time. The format for this event is an 8-team round-robin, with each team playing every other team once. The top team at the end of the round robin will get a spot in the final, while the second and third seeds will play in a semi-final. From there, the winner of the 2v3 game and the top seed will face off in a best two-of-three final. The winner will advance to compete in the 2025 Canadian Olympic Trials in November.
