![]() WOLFVILLE, N.S. — Few curlers understand the Home Hardware Canadian Pre-Trials better than Krista Scharf. Scharf is competing at her fifth Canadian pre-trials event and has earned her ticket to all three of her trials appearances through the event. Scharf - along with third Kendra Lilly, second Ashley Sippala, lead/vice-skip Sarah Potts and coach Rick Lang - is seeking a record-extending fourth pre-trials victory and is now one step closer on Wednesday night after her Thunder Bay, Ont., unit improved to 2-3 with a 7-6 win against Team Beth Peterson (2-3; Winnipeg). “We’ve been here quite a few times, and I think probably most of the teams are out there thinking this is another tournament, kind of like another Scotties, where you’re on the arena ice and it’s a long week too,” said Scharf. “But it’s one game at a time, and I don’t really feel like we have a target on our backs because we’re really not out there too much. Most teams know each other, except for us.” Team Scharf started fast, jumping out to a 4-0 lead through three ends. Team Peterson battled back in, capitalizing on a late-game surge of singles in the seventh through ninth ends to tie the game. But Scharf, who also holds the pre-trials record for most appearances among women with five, snuffed out any shot of a Team Peterson win by making a hack-weight hit around a guard to score in the 10th and pick up the win. It has been a slow start to the week for Team Scharf, dropping its first two games, and putting the team’s back against the wall. “We knew going into it that it was going to be a battle. We've been battling a little bit this whole week, and we need to stay alive. Every single win is important. Just with three losses, we know that our backs are against the wall and we’ve got to win every one from here,” said Scharf. Team Scharf has an opportunity to finish the round robin on Thursday with two more wins and have a crack at qualifying for the three-team playoffs, where the top team advances directly to the final. The second and third-ranked teams play in the semifinals. “We have been learning a lot more with every single game, and we’re shooting better. We struggled with the first two draws, and we didn’t pick up on the ice. Technically we were not super strong, and I feel like we’ve been building every single game out there, and we learn something new,” Scharf said. “And I think that’s really important. It’s nice to be at the beginning of the year like this because we don’t get this kind of competition in October.” In other Draw 9 women’s action Team Danielle Inglis (2-3) stayed in the hunt with an 8-5 win against Team Nancy Martin (1-4, Martensville, Sask.), and Team Myla Plett (3-2; Edmonton/Sherwood Park, Alta.) jumped up the standings after beating the previously undefeated Team Kayla MacMillan (4-1; Victoria, B.C.) with a 5-4 extra-end win. In men’s action, Team Jaden King (3-3; London, Ont.) bettered Team Owen Purcell (2-4; Halifax) with an 8-3 win and Team Jean-Michel Ménard (4-2; Montréal) kept moving forward with an 8-5 win against Team Mark Kean (0-6; Woodstock, Ont.)
