MacMillan vs Thevenot: For a Spot in the Finals
![]() British Columbia's Kayla MacMillan is set to face Saskatchewan's Ashley Thevenot in the semi-final at the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. By Connor Simms, The #26 World-Ranked team from Victoria, British Columbia, with Kayla MacMillan skipping with Brittany Tran at third, Lindsay Dubue, Sarah Loken, and Lauren Lenentine on the front end, are looking strong. They went 5-2 through the round robin. In their opening game, MacMillan defeated Ashley Thevenot (Saskatoon, SK) 7-2, then won 9-7 against Danielle Inglis (Ottawa, ON) and 6-4 against Nancy Martin (Wakaw, SK). MacMillan won 8-2 against Krista Scharf (Thunder Bay, NO). MacMillan went on to lose 5-4 against Myla Plett (Edmonton, AB). MacMillan lost 10-2 to Selena Sturmay (Edmonton, AB), where MacMillan responded with a 7-6 win over Beth Peterson (Winnipeg, MB) in their final qualifying round match. The #43 World-Ranked team from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with Ashley Thevenot skipping with Stephanie Schmidt at third, Taylor Stremick and Kaylin Mattern on the front end, was in a must-win situation heading into their final round robin game. They went 4-3 through the round robin, tied with Danielle Inglis, but her round robin win over Inglis propelled her to the semi-finals. In their opening game, Thevenot lost 7-2 to Kayla MacMillan, then responded with a 9-5 win over Nancy Martin (Wakaw, SK). Thevenot went on to lose 7-2 against Beth Peterson (Winnipeg, MB). Thevenot responded with an 8-7 win over Danielle Inglis (Ottawa, ON). Thevenot went on to lose 11-5 against Selena Sturmay (Edmonton, AB). Thevenot responded with an 8-5 win over Myla Plett (Edmonton, AB). Thevenot won 6-5 against Krista Scharf (Thunder Bay, NO) in their final qualifying round match. This set up a match in the semi-final. The winner will face Selena Sturmay (Edmonton, AB) in the best-of-three final for a spot in the 2025 Canadian Olympic Trials in November. MacMillan is 2-0 all-time in this skipping battle, defeating Thevenot earlier in the week as well as last season at the HearingLife Tour Challenge Tier 2 event.
