Jason Gunnlaugson wins MCT Championships


Jason Gunnlaugson (Winnipeg, MB) wins the MCT Championships, defeating Team Simmons (Winnipeg, MB) 5-4 at the East St. Paul Curling Club in Winnipeg, Canada. Gunnlaugson with Alex Forrest at third, Ian McMillan and Connor Njegovan on the front end take home the $2,000CDN first place cheque along with 28.970 world ranking points, while Simmons receives $1,500CDN and 22.762 world ranking points for their second place finish.

Starting with hammer, Simmons scored 1 in the first end. After a blank end, Gunnlaugson scored a single the third end, then added a steal in the fourth end. Simmons scored 2 in the fifth end to lead 3-2, then added a steal in the sixth end. Gunnlaugson scored 2 in the seventh end to tie the game into the final end where they added a steal in the eighth end for the 5-4 win.

In the semifinals, Gunnlaugson defeated William Lyburn (Winnipeg, MB) 7-0 and Simmons defeated Dennis Bohn (Winnipeg, MB) 4-3. Lyburn and Bohn earned $1,000CDN and 17.589 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Gunnlaugson defeated David Bohn (Winnipeg, MB) 5-4 in an extra end, Simmons defeated Jordan Smith (Winnipeg, MB) 5-4, while Lyburn defeated Braden Calvert (Winnipeg, MB) 8-4 and Bohn defeated JT Ryan (Winnipeg, MB) 6-1. Calvert, Bohn, Smith and Ryan earned $500CDN along with 12.416 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Gunnlaugson was away at the Canadian Olympic Trials until Saturday afternoon with Derek Light filling in until Jason arrived back in Winnipeg. Gunnlaugson went 2-1 in the 15 team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Gunnlaugson lost 5-4 to Sean Grassie (Winnipeg, MB), then responded with a 8-7 win over Lyburn. Gunnlaugson won against Travis Bale (Winnipeg, MB) 5-1 in the B Qualifier to reach the playoff round.
