Jacobs gets bounce-back wins at Trials
![]() Brad Jacobs (Photo: Curling Canada) won 6-4 in extra ends over Saskatoon's Rylan Kleiter Nov. 23 at the Montana's Canadian Curling Trials. By Meredith McCullum Having lost his opener Saturday evening, Brad Jacobs picked up a huge win over Rylan Kleiter in a tight battle that came down to the final shot of the eleventh end in Halifax, N.S. Sunday afternoon. "After I took a little bit of time to myself, we met up, we had some pizza, and I basically, you know, apologized to the guys and said that loss was entirely on me," said Jacobs, reflecting on his team's opening loss. "I was just not good in that first game, but you know what? Sometimes those types of losses can be the best thing for you," Jacobs is backed by teammates Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant and Ben Hebert, all of whom have Olympic experience, so the Calgary, Alta. squad is no stranger to the pressure of this event. "We know what it takes to win this thing, and what it takes is your absolute best. The reality of it is if you want to win this week, you have to curl probably 92-93% most of the week, and especially at the end of the week when it matters the most. And that's our goal. That's what we're here to try to do." The Jacobs rink started with hammer against Kleiter, opening with back-to-back blanks. In the third, Jacobs capitalized on a well played end by his team, scoring a deuce to go up 2-0. The teams traded singles in the fourth and fifth ends. After a blank in six, they traded singles again in seven and eight. Kleiter, backed by Joshua Mattern, Matthew Hall and Trevor Johnson, blanked the ninth to take hammer into the final end down 4-2. In the tenth end, Kleiter made a long angle raise to bump back Jacobs shot stone in the back four-foot and sit 2, tying the game and forcing an extra end. "We weren't surprised. We've had that happen lots against us, but keeping it in perspective that we have hammer in the extra end is really important," said Jacobs, on how his team regrouped after Kleiter's last shot in the tenth. "Just calming ourselves down. I think the 90 seconds that we get between ends and that opportunity to be together and just discuss what's next and move forward is key." In the extra, Kleiter made a shot to sit 2 in the four-foot on his last, leaving Jacobs a tricky double for the win. Jacobs made no mistake, eliminating both of Kleiter's rocks to score 2 and win the game 6-4. Now sitting 1-1, Jacobs has back to back games on Monday, facing Mike McEwen (1-1) at 9 a.m. AST and Jordon McDonald (0-2) at 7 p.m. AST. Jacobs said he is looking forward to the matchup against McDonald's young squad, and shouldn't be counted out against their youthful spirit. "It's really neat now to be one of the older guys, one of the veterans out here playing against them," said Jacobs. "But I'll tell you, even though I'm 40, I think I can outdo some of these 20 and 30 year olds in the gym still. So watch out. We still got lots left in the tank." In other draw 3 action, Brad Gushue beat Kevin Koe 5-3, Matt Dunstone beat Jordon McDonald 8-4 and John Epping beat Mike McEwen 9-5. The women play their third draw of the week tonight at 7 p.m. AST, with Corryn Brown facing Kerri Einarson on the TSN feature sheet.
