Gushue, Dunstone stay undefeated ahead of matchup tonight
![]() Matt Dunstone (Photo: Curling Canada) took down Rylan Kleiter to stay undefeated through three games at the Montana's Canadian Curling Trials in Halifax, N.S. on Nov. 24. By Meredith McCullum Matt Dunstone beat Rylan Kleiter 7-3 and Brad Gushue kept his win streak alive with a 5-3 win over John Epping as both teams improved to 3-0 Monday morning. Gushue and Dunstone face off tonight in a battle of the undefeated teams. With both teams at the top of their game in this event so far, the stage is set for a tight matchup with elite shot making from each side. "I wouldn't have it any other way," said Dunstone on tonight's battle against Gushue. "Greatest Canadian Curler of all time, and on the greatest stage of curling...I can't wait, I hope it's going to be one hell of a battle." This morning, Dunstone - backed by Colton Lott, E.J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden - capitalized with hammer early, scoring 2 in the first and stealing 1 in the second. Kleiter got on the board in the third before Dunstone took control of the game with another deuce and steal to go up 6-1 after five ends. The teams traded singles for the rest of the game and shook hands after eight ends as Dunstone's Winnipeg, Man. squad picked up the 7-3 victory. "Got a cheeky little deuce in the first end, and just scoreboard control from there," said Dunstone after the game. "[We] put a lot of pressure on them today...I like where this team is at right now." On the next sheet over, Gushue - backed by Mark Nichols, Brendan Bottcher and Geoff Walker - looked in fine form this afternoon. He made a long angle raise against 2 that landed on the button to score in the eighth. Epping got a single in the ninth end to make it a 5-3 game, but Gushue's squad ran them out of rocks in the tenth, securing a third straight victory in Halifax. "When you start an event like this, you try to get to 5 or 6 wins as fast as you can," said Mark Nichols, third for team Gushue, after the game. "We're playing really good right now, making a lot of key shots, and it's nice being out in front of a big crowd." Gushue and Dunstone face off tonight in a battle of the undefeated teams. Dunstone has been the hotter team this season, with two finals appearances and a championship at the three Grand Slam of Curling events this fall. Gushue has seen success at the Trials though, winning the event in 2005 and 2021. He knows what it takes to keep playing into championship weekend at the Trials, and his experience will be key in tonights matchup. "They've been playing at a high level for a long time, so we've got to be precise and keep doing what we're doing," said Nichols on tonight's matchup against Dunstone. In other action this morning, Brad Jacobs improved to a 2-1 record with a 6-3 win over Mike McEwen, and Kevin Koe edged Jordon McDonald in a back-and-forth battle to secure his second win. The women take the ice at 2 p.m. AST and then the men are back on at 7 p.m. AST to close out the day.
