Lawes, Black, Sturmay fighting for final playoff spot at Trials
![]() Alberta's Selena Sturmay (Photo: Curling Canada/Andrew Klaver) is in a race with Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes and Nova Scotia's Christina Black for the final playoff spot at the 2025 Montana's Canadian Curling Trials in Halifax, N.S. By Meredith McCullum With one draw left in round robin play, the women's standings at the 2025 Montana's Canadian Curling Trials are heating up. Manitoba's Kerri Einarson and Ontario's Rachel Homan have clinched playoff berths and will battle it out for first or second at 7 p.m. AST in the TSN feature game. The third spot is wide open, though, in a 3-way race for a semifinal berth between Edmonton's Selena Sturmay, Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes and hometown team out of the Halifax Curling Club Christina Black. Sturmay - backed by Danielle Schmiemann, Dezaray Hawes and Paige Papley - faces British Columbia's Corryn Brown (1-5) in the final round robin game. If Sturmay wins and Lawes loses, Sturmay will qualify for playoffs, having beaten Black 9-7 on Tuesday evening. Lawes - backed by Selena Njegovan, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin Gordon - will clinch the final playoff spot if she wins and Black loses, having defeated Sturmay 8-7 in an extra end Sunday morning. Lawes rink faces Alberta's Kayla Skrlik in their final game. Black - backed by Jill Brothers, Jenn Baxter, Karlee Everist and Marlee Powers - faces Manitoba's Kate Cameron to close out round robin action. If Black wins and Sturmay loses, Black will play in the semifinal, holding the head-to-head over Lawes with a 7-3 win Sunday night. If Sturmay, Lawes and Black all win their respective matchups, they will sit in a three way tie and LSD will determine the final playoff team. Black has the top LSD ranking, Sturmay second and Lawes in third, meaning if all three teams win, Black will go to the semifinal. The games begin at 2 p.m. AST. The semifinal will be played at 1 p.m. AST on Thursday, then the best-of-three finals games will be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if needed), all at 1 p.m. AST. Catch the games on TSN (Canada) and TSN YouTube (internationally). Linescores and standings are available at Curlingzone.com. |
