By: Cameron Sallaj The opening day of action in the women's curling event in Cortina saw a double header for Denmark as they went up against Canada and Japan. In the morning, they suffered a disastrous fifth end against Homan's Canadian side, giving up a steal of four to ultimately conceded the match 10-4. Looking for redemption, the team took on Sayaka Yoshimura at night. A solid first half gave the Danish team, skipped by Madeleine Dupont, control of the match which she held onto for the win. After conceding a steal in the first end, Dupont got two with the hammer in the second before stealing back-to-back singles in ends three and four. Despite giving up two in the fifth, her team continued to lead 4-3. In ends six and seven, the two teams traded deuces. This was followed by a stolen point for Yoshimura's Japanese side, bringing the score to a level six-all with two ends remaining. Holding hammer in the ninth, Dupont went long on her final draw attempt for two, only managing to count one. This mistake proved to be salvageable, however, as Japan was only able to count one in the tenth to force an extra. There, Dupont connected on a short runback attempt to count three and lift her team to a 10-7 in Draw 2. With a plethora of Olympic and World appearances to draw from, Dupont sisters Madeleine and Denise are two of the most experienced players in the entire Olympic field. Alongside second time participants Mathilde Halse, Jasmin Holtermann and My Larsen, the team is looking to make a charge at the podium with their current best finish being fifth in 2010. Not only this, but Team Dupont also enters the Olympics with one of their best seasons to date, winning four tour titles and qualifying for both Grand Slam Tier 2 events. Now with win number one under their belts, the Danes will look to make it two straight against Sweden's Anna Hasselborg on Friday at 8:05 AM ET.
