Cottrills win Southern States Mixed Doubles


Katie Cottrill/Shawn Cottrill (Listowel, Ontario) wins the Southern States Mixed Doubles, defeating Courtney Shaw/Melvin Shaw (Potomac, MD) 7-5 at the Charlotte Curling Association in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. Cottrill/Cottrill take home the $1,387CDN first place cheque, while Shaw/Shaw receives $883CDN for their second place finish in the first year of the Southern States Mixed Doubles as an ISS World Mixed Doubles Tour event.

Starting with hammer, Cottrill/Cottrill scored 2 in the first end, then added a steal in the second end. Shaw/Shaw scored 3 in the third end, then added a steal in the fourth end to take the lead. Cottrill/Cottrill scored 2 in the fifth end to lead to 5-4, then added a steal in the sixth end. Shaw/Shaw scored a single in the seventh end to cut the deficit but Cottrill/Cottrill scored a single in the eighth end for the 7-5 win.

In the semifinals, Cottrill/Cottrill defeated Sam Munich/Tom Munich (Hartland, WI) 13-4 and Shaw/Shaw won 8-5over Lisa Menard/Ray Baker (Dauphin, MB). Munich/Munich and Menard/Baker earned $504CDN for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Cottrill/Cottrill defeated Carol McKee/David Coates (Charlotte, NC) 8-2, Shaw/Shaw won 6-5 in an extra end over Dawn Hozjan/Jeremy Hozjan (Charlotte, NC), Munich knocked off Stacey MacNeil/Brady Gould (Charlotte, NC) 8-6 and Menard/Baker defeated Kathy Jackson/Murray Jackson (Durham, NC) 7-3. Hozjan/Hozjan, Jackson/Jackson, McKee/Coates and MacNeil/Gould earned $252CDN for their quarterfinal finishes.

Cottrill/Cottrill went 3-0 in the 24 team round-robin pools qualifying round. In their opening game, Cottrill/Cottrill defeated Lacie Byers/Matthew Kenlan (Charlotte, NC) 8-2, won against McKee/Coates 13-4 and Alison Roark/Ryan Smith (Greenville, SC) 8-4 in their final qualifying round match.
