Reid Carruthers wins Karuizawa International
Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, Canada) wins the Karuizawa International, defeating Yuta Matsumura (Sapporo, Japan) 7-6 at the Karuiawa Ice Park in Karuizawa, Japan. Carruthers with Mike McEwen at third, Matt Wozniak and Colin Hodgson on the front end take home the $15,894CDN first place cheque along with 26.156 world ranking points, while Matsumura receives $9,781CDN and 19.181 world ranking points for their second place finish. Starting with hammer, Carruthers scored 4 in the first end, then forced Matsumura to a single in the second end. After Matsumura added a steal in the third end, Carruthers responded in the fourth end scoring 2 to extend the lead to 6-2. Matsumura scored a single in the fifth end, then forced Carruthers to a single in the sixth end. Matsumura scored 2 in the seventh end to close the deficit to 2 point, but Carruthers made the open hit with his last shot of the eighth end for the 7-6 win. John Shuster (Duluth, USA) won the bronze medal game, defeating Masaki Iwai (Sapporo, Japan) 5-4. Shuster won $6,113CDN, while Iwai won $4,891CDN along 13.950 ranking points. Starting with hammer, Shuster scored 1 in the first end, then forced Iwai to a single in the second end. Shuster scored a single in the third end, then added a steal in the fourth end to lead 3-1. Iwai scored a single in the fifth end, then forced Shuster to a single in the sixth end. Iwai scored 2 in the seventh end to tie the game with Shuster scoring a single point in the eighth end for the 5-4 win. In the semifinals, Matsumura defeated Shuster 8-1 and Carruthers defeated Iwai 5-2. In the quarterfinals, Shuster defeated Ryo Ogihara (Karuizawa, Japan) 6-5, Iwai defeated Jongduk Park (Gangwon, Korea) 5-4 in an extra end, while Matsumura defeated SooHyuk Kim (Seoul, Korea) 5-4 and Carruthers defeated Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi (Karuizawa, Japan) 6-2. Ogihara, Park, Kim and Yamaguchi earned $3,057CDN along with 10.463 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes. Carruthers went 4-0 in the 15 team round robin qualifying round. In their opening game, Carruthers defeated Yamaguchi 5-2, won against Yoshiro Shimizu (Karuizawa, Japan) 7-1, against Park 6-2, and then won against Daiki Shikano (Sapporo, Japan) 9-2 in their final qualifying round match. |
