 The World Qualification Event 2022 (photo: Celine Stucki/WCF) will get underway on Monday (17 January) at the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja, Finland. This event is the final chance for teams to qualify for both the LGT World Men's Curling Championship 2022 in Las Vegas, United States and the BKT Tires & OK Tire World Women's Curling Championship 2022 in Prince George, Canada. From a field of seven women's and men's teams on each side, there will be two places at each World Championship available. Both the champions and the runners-up will earn their Member Association a place in their respective World Championship. This championship will be played in a COVID-secure bubble following the cancellation of the World Junior-B Curling Championships earlier this month. Qualification Fourteen teams have qualified for this event through their results at various World Curling events, including the America's Challenge 2021*, the Pacific-Asia Curling Championships 2021* (PACC) and the Le Gruyere AOP European Curling Championships 2021 (ECC) or as hosts. *Both Brazil men and Kazakhstan women qualified for this event but are unable to attend due to travel complications. In each of those competitions, a pre-set number of nations qualified directly to the world championships, with spaces in this qualification event going to the next-ranked participants. In the women's World Qualification Event: Europe: Czech Republic, Denmark, Latvia and Norway Pacific-Asia: Hong Kong Americas: Brazil Hosts: Finland In the men's World Qualification Event: Europe: Netherlands, Russia, Spain and Turkey Pacific-Asia: Japan and Chinese Taipei Hosts: Finland This will be the first showing for Chinese Taipei at a World Qualification Event. System of play Teams will play a single round-robin series beginning on Monday (17 January). At the end of the round-robin on Friday (21 January), teams who finished in the top three will advance to the play-offs. On Saturday (22 January), the top-ranked team will play the second-ranked team, with the winner of this game qualifying for the World Curling Championships. The losers of those games will then face the third-ranked team, with the winners taking the second and last available world qualification slots. This will be the third edition of the World Qualification Event, with Lohja hosting most recently in 2020 and the 2021 version being cancelled. The BKT Tires & OK Tire World Women's Curling Championship 2022 will take place in Prince George, Canada, from 19 to 27 March. The LGT World Men's Curling Championship 2022 will be held in Las Vegas, United States, from 2-10 April. Both championships will feature 13 of the top teams in the world. Currently, the reigning World Champions are Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni for women and Sweden's Niklas Edin on the men's side. |
