Edin, Colter and Horgan win Toronto Tankard B finals

Three more teams, Niklas Edin (Photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC), Travis Colter, and Tanner Horgan have qualified for the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard playoffs.

Draw 15 of the Toronto Tankard featured all three of the men's B final matches. The winners of the games all qualified for the playoff round while the losers dropped into the last chance C Event.

In the all-European qualifier, Sweden's Niklas Edin went against Norway's Magnus Ramsfjell. The Norwegians were the first to get on the board with a single in the first, but Edin responded with two in the second and a steal of one in the third. Ramsfjell got one back in the fourth to cut into the lead 3-2.

The defending Olympic and World champions scored their second deuce of the game in the fifth end, but the team from Norway matched that score in the sixth end to make the game a close 5-4 affair. After a blank in the seventh, the Swedish team of Niklas Edin, Oskar Eriksson, Rasmus Wrana, and Christoffer Sundgren from Karlstad took two in the eighth to close out the match with a final score of 7-4.

The next qualifier was a battle of two Canadian teams in Nova Scotia's Travis Colter and Ontario's Glenn Howard. This game was tight through the first half as well with Team Howard taking two in the first end. The Colter rink then blanked before putting a big score of four on the board in the third end, which was followed by a single in the fourth by Howard, making the score 4-3.

To begin the second half, the Nova Scotia rink of skip Travis Colter, fourth Cameron MacKenzie, second Ian Juurlink, and lead Robby McLean put three points on the board to go ahead by four. After the Howard rink only got one back in the sixth, they conceded the match by a 7-4 score.

A mix of both a Canadian and international team was the third B qualifier with Northern Ontario's Tanner Horgan battling against Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller. This game didn't see its first score until the fourth end where Team Horgan scored a single point.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Schwaller getting one in the fifth and Horgan taking the lead back with one in the sixth. The Swiss rink was able to tie the score with one in seven, but Tanner Horgan was able to secure victory for his team of Joey Hart, Jacob Horgan, and Colin Hodgson in the eighth with a draw to the four-foot for the win. Hart is in at third for Team Horgan, sparing for Darren Moulding.

With the wins, Edin, Colter, and Horgan now join Italy's Joel Retornaz and Ontario's Sam Mooibroek in the eight team Stu Sells Toronto Tankard playoff round. The final three spots are to be decided tonight in the C Event finals set for 7:00 and 10:00 PM Eastern Time.

The other two games in Draw 15 were both women's C event quarterfinals. Krysta Burns (Sudbury, NONT) cruised to a 10-3 win over Emily Deschenes (Ottawa, ON) while Chelsea Brandwood (Listowel, ON) stole in an extra end to defeat Rhonda Varnes (Portage la Prairie, MB) 6-5.
