Einarson wins WFG Masters
Kerri Einarson (Gimli, MB)(photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) wins the WFG Masters, defeating Rachel Homan (Ottawa, ON) 6-5 in an extra end on Sunday. Einarson with Val Sweeting at third, Shannon Birchard and Briane Harris on the front end reached their fifth straight Grand Slam final, with their previous win coming in May at the KIOTI Tractor Champions Cup in Olds. Starting with hammer, Einarson scored 2 in the first end, then forced Homan to a single in the second end. After a blank end, Einarson was held to a single point in the fourth end, with Homan taking the lead for the first in the fifth end scoring 3. Einarson scored 2 in the sixth end to take back the lead at 5-4. After a blank end in the seventh end, Einarson held Homan to a single the eighth end, then scored a single in the extra end for the 6-5 win. With the win, Einarson takes home the $35,000CDN first-place cheque along with 75.000 world ranking points, while Homan receives $20,000CDN and 55.000 world ranking points for their second-place finish. Einarson twice was runner up this season in Grand Slam finals, losing 8-4 to Homan in the final of the HearingLife Tour Challenge and 7-3 to Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni in the final of the Boost National. In the semifinals, Einarson defeated Tabitha Peterson of the United States 8-3 and Homan defeated Korea's Eun-Ji Gim 5-3. Gim and Peterson earned $15,000CDN and 42.500 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Einarson defeated Winnipeg's Chelsea Carey 5-4 in an extra end, Homan defeated Sweden's Anna Hasselborg 5-2, Peterson won 6-5 over Selena Njegovan and Team Lawes while Gim won 9-6 over Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones. Einarson finished 4-0 in the 16 team round-robin qualifying round held at the Sixteen Mile Sports Centre in Oakville, Ontario. In their opening game, Einarson defeated Eunjung Kim (Gangneung, KOR) 8-6, then won 8-5 against Jones and 8-4 against Clancy Grandy (Vancouver, BC). Einarson finished up pool play with an 8-5 win against Satsuki Fujisawa (Kitami, JPN) to finish as the top seed into the playoff round. |
