Niklas Edin wins Baden Masters


Niklas Edin (Karlstad, SWE) wins the Baden Masters, defeating Thomas Ulsrud (Oslo, NOR) 5-4 in the final held in Baden, Swizerland. Edin with Oskar Eriksson at third and Rasmus Wrana and Christoffer Sundgren on the front end take home the $14,181CDN first place cheque along with 40.671 world ranking points, while Ulsrud receives $9,024CDN and 31.956 world ranking points for their second place finish.

Starting with hammer, Edin blanked the first 2 ends, got on the board scoring 1 in the third end. Ulsrud responded in the fourth end scoring 2 to the lead, then Edin scored 2 in the fifth end, then added a steal in the sixth end to extend their advantage to 4-2. Ulsrud scored 2 in the seventh end to tie the game into the final end where Edin scored a single for the 5-4 win.

In the semifinals, Edin defeated Marc Pfister (Adelboden, SUI) 8-1 and Ulsrud defeated Steffen Walstad (Oppdal, NOR) 5-4 in an extra end. Pfister and Walstad earned $4,512CDN and 24.693 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Edin defeated Peter De Cruz (Geneva, SUI) 6-5, Ulsrud defeated Yannick Schwaller (Bern, SUI) 6-5, while Walstad defeated Kristian Lindstroem (Lit, SWE) 9-2 and Pfister defeated Felix Attinger (Dubendorf, SUI) 6-4. Schwaller, Lindstroem, De Cruz and Attinger earned $1,934CDN along with 17.430 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Edin went 3-1 in the 20 team round-robin pools qualifying round. In their opening game, Edin lost 6-3 to Schwaller, then responded with a 7-2 win over Evgeniy Arkhipov (Moscow, RUS). Edin won against Stefan Staehli (Bern, SUI) 9-6, then won against Aku Kauste (Hyvinkaa, FIN) 9-3 in their final qualifying round match.
